About the Artwork:

We all have our moments when we want to people watch. Who among us hasn't gone shopping, to a park, to the airport, or out for the day and found ourselves looking around to observe everything around us. We're just waiting to talk to our friends or family about what and who we saw. This is the feeling I wanted to capture with this oil on canvas rosette spoonbill Wingman. I wanted to bird to be observing without being seen to look around so that it could take in the world around it.

This small oil on canvas is a close look at a roseate spoonbill in rest, face tucked in, eye still open. I wanted the bird to feel like it was observing everything without being seen, still but fully present. It’s a quiet moment, but full of awareness.

I love the contrast in spoonbills, soft, layered feathers in delicate pinks and whites, paired with textured, almost dinosaur-like skin on their faces. That combination of strange and beautiful is exactly what draws me to them. I wanted to lean into that here, focusing on the shape, the texture, and the emotion that comes through in just one watchful eye.
