"I See You" is part of the Ugly Pretty series, a bold and expressive collection capturing coastal birdlife beauty.

Growing up, my dad used to take me fishing on vacations in Florida. I’d spot fiddler crabs near the mangroves and piers where they would back away with that one oversized claw held high to bluff danger and largeness of presence. I was fascinated. They were tiny but bold, and I couldn't wait to see them the next time.

When painting this piece, I wanted to put my memories of the crab’s drama with the spoonbill’s curious stare. The contrast between them felt like a little conversation: one small, one large, both trying to figure the other out. I placed them on calm water with reflected trees and a weathered branch to hold the scene in stillness. It's quiet, a little funny, and full of tension, which is exactly what I wanted to capture.
