About the Artwork:

Ever zone out watching sunlight sparkle across the water? That shifting, glittery magic that only shows up for a minute, and then it’s gone? I’ve lived near the water many times in my life, and I never get tired of it. Morning or evening, the colors change by the second. I wanted to mix that with spoonbills, one of my favorite birds, to capture the mood and light.

This piece is a snapshot from my mind. I wanted to keep that colorful water with a spoonbill fishing. I love how they can be head down and pushing through the water in that fast zig-zag and these beautiful birds are blissfully unaware of beautiful they are as well as how beautiful it is around them. I wanted to capture how their feathers catch the light in those moments you just want to take a few to look at that light filtration before that time frame in life is gone.

I painted Push It as part of my Ugly Pretty series. Spoonbills are awkward and elegant, all at once, dino faces, sparkly eyes, and layers of soft feathers that light up when the sun hits just right. I wanted to capture that movement, that glow, and that feeling of sitting by the water and catching something fleeting.
