About the Artwork:
There were several ponds near my house, right outside my door, where I used to walk my dog every day. I got to see the water in different seasons and lights. I truly loved the time of year when the ducks would migrate and settle in for a while. I could never quite photograph them. They’d make a swimming dash for the middle of the pond the second I opened the door. But I loved that part of my routine. Over time, I became fascinated by how different all the ducks are in the world.
Then I discovered Ruddy Ducks.
I mean, come on. Who wouldn’t do a double take looking at that bill? That blue! It caught my eye immediately, and I knew I wanted to paint them. Those soft, neutral feathers with that bold splash of color.
Morning Shimmer is my way of capturing that fascination. I painted him in oil on canvas, using impasto texture to layer the shimmer of water and the softness of his feathers. I wanted it to feel like you were there, just off the edge of the pond, catching your breath as the sun hits the ripples and he glides through. Maybe even grabbing your little dog in “air jail” and speeding up your walk like you’re really going to get a good picture of the ducks this time. (Spoiler: you're not. But I still tried. Every time.)
This painting is part of my Puddle Ducks series. It came from a love for these quirky, fun little birds and how varied their colors, markings, and personalities are. It’s my way of pretending I might actually get close enough for the perfect snapshot, while also knowing that just being near them for a few minutes is enough. We all need more of those nonsensical adventures. Trying to sneak into a flock, laughing at yourself, and catching a moment of wild stillness in the middle of your day.
