They show up through the cold months like tiny companions, bringing a bit of brightness into gray days. For such small birds, they carry a surprising spark of warmth.

There is a belief that chickadees carry messages between worlds. Is it true? There is no proof, but the idea has always felt comforting. People imagine these little birds picking up pieces of meaning and, out of curiosity or kindness, carrying them along as they flit through the trees. It is a gentle thought, and one that makes their presence feel even more special.

Where Warmth and Winter Meet​

When I created this piece, I focused on the small details that make chickadees so endearing. Their feathers have a softness that feels almost weightless, and I wanted the brushwork to reflect that gentle texture. I worked with a limited palette and mixed all of the darker tones myself rather than using black or gray. This keeps the harmony of the painting warm and natural, especially in a winter setting.

The background carries soft shifts of gold and cool winter light, the kind of glow you sometimes see on cold days when the sun sits low. The greenery and berries add a seasonal note without overwhelming the bird. Instead, they frame it quietly, allowing the chickadee to hold the center of the moment.

Chickadees have a way of showing up just when you need them. They tilt their heads, flick their wings, and stay present in a way that feels personal. I painted this piece with that feeling in mind. The calm posture, the warm undertones, the gentle winter colors. It all comes together to create a moment that feels still and meaningful. A small pause in the middle of winter.
