With my artwork I create an underlying inking of my sketch drawing on the canvas before painting. This is the core of the artwork, just like we ourselves have a core that speaks to us. We often cover this core to show who we are and what our presence holds. Just like this internal personal core, the ink in my oil paintings is covered up. Instead of personality and clothes, I use impasto, gesso, and oil paint to cover the inked canvas. The inking is a peekaboo that you can sometimes see with a backlit canvas, showing the fine lines and original power of the sketch. Once it’s covered, that artwork is gone forever, hidden under layers of color.
Like ourselves, we show a bit of our core to others through the accessories we choose. The Tufted Twilight scarf brings that layer forward again. It reveals what usually stays beneath the surface, turning the foundation of my paintings into something you can hold, wear, and make your own. It’s a reminder that what’s underneath still defines us, even when we dress it in our version of ink.

About the Artwork:
The Foundation Revealed
Tufted Twilight is the second portrait inspired by evenings when my young daughter and I would listen to two owls calling from our rooftop. Those nights were about spending time together, listening to the world. We had such exciting moments listening to the running, clickity feet and soft hoots that our ordinary moments became unforgettable. The humid air, the stillness, and the crickets and frogs in chorus cheering on the owls, along with the rhythm of those distant calls, left an impression I’ve returned to more than once.
With my love of owls and my experiences with them, I wanted to expand the beauty of owls in art from my Reflected Intensity eagle owl to my Tufted Twilight. This horned owl has such expression, like there’s really something to say, with his open mouth telling the truth to the world in a bold fashion.
Each painting I create begins with ink, a structural sketch that later disappears under gesso and oil. The Tufted Twilight Silk Art Scarf brings that foundation back into view, turning the framework that usually lies hidden beneath paint into a refined, tactile artwork.
In a continuation of a story of mystery, wonder, and closeness, Tufted Twilight extends the evolution of owls in my art, a symbol of perception, strength, and the unspoken language between memory and creation.
