One-of-a-Kind | 4" x 4" Artwork on a 4" x 4" Archival Multimedia Panel
Have you ever had a hummingbird stop right in front of you, wings buzzing but completely still in the air? They’ll stare at you for a second, curious and bold, like they’re trying to figure out who you are.
When I was growing up, we always had a feeder outside our kitchen window. My dad made sure it was filled every spring, and we’d watch hummingbirds zip through the yard from morning to dusk. They were always in motion, darting, chasing, and standing their ground at the feeder.
Sometimes they’d fly into each other so hard they’d fall to the ground. I remember picking one up gently to check if it was okay. After a few seconds, it would shake itself off and fly right back into the mix. I loved how their feathers shimmered in the light, changing with every tiny movement.
That’s what made me fall in love with hummingbirds. I still pause every time I see one.
"Desert Ember" features a Rufous Hummingbird, perched but alert. There’s a warmth and glow to them that feels like firelight. Small, but full of energy. Calm for a moment, but ready to launch back into the air at any second.
This piece is about that feeling when you hear the buzz, scan the air, and spot them holding still just long enough to make eye contact. You don’t want to move too fast and scare them off. It’s a standoff filled with color, energy, and a few unforgettable seconds before they rocket off to their next mission.

A Spark in Stillness
Hummingbirds are rarely still, but when they pause, everything else feels like it's holding position.
"Desert Ember" captures that split second when movement stops, but energy radiates.
This Rufous Hummingbird is perched, but alert. Its feathers catch the light in golds, coppers, and flashes of violet. I drew it to feel like it could lift off at any second.
There’s a tension in the pose, the kind you feel when something wild gives you just a little more time to take it in.
This moment won’t last long, but it's enough to stay with you.
